Experimental Building

The straw home we’ve been building here on Muirhouse Farm has been a research project as much as it is now a product we’d like to replicate.

Straw is an exciting building material which provides excellent insulating qualities. We built a sturdy wooden frame and an insulating, environmentally-friendly turf roof as well as an eco-friendly floor which is laid with lime rather than concrete. A connection to the Farm’s wood chip boiler contributes to a warm and cosy feel inside the house and all of that with a zero carbon footprint.

Our hope is that, with this creation, we’ll show that you can build beautiful, unique and long-lasting homes without causing any damage to the environment. If you’d like rent the Straw House for your holiday or just to get a feel for the material click here.
